The Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park is a fun, family friendly attraction where guests can learn all about Ponce de Leon and the early Spanish settlers that arrived in the 16th century. The site sits on 15 acres of intracoastal, waterfront property where the native Timucuans had settled for more than 3,000 years!
The site features an active archaeological dig site, several recreated Spanish and Timucuan buildings, an observation tower, a riverwalk and loads of beautiful scenery. Don't forget to stop by The Spring House and take a sip from the natural spring that was Ponce de Leon's legendary Fountain of Youth! There's plenty of free parking and the park is a 12 min drive away from The Salty Pineapple.
What can visitors do?
The park holds severeal daily shows and historical reenactments that are fun and educational. Shows include: the Planetarium, Discovery Globe (tracing the routes of the early explorers, the Timucuan Village, and the reconstructed First Mission of Nombre de Dios), Timucuan Theater, Achaeological Exhibit, a Cannon Firing show, and Early Firearms Exhibit and more! There are also a few dozen free-roaming peacocks that visitors like to feed and interact with.
What makes it unique?
This is the site of the first Spanish settlement in the new world. Founded by Spanish explorer Pedro Menéndez de Avilés in 1565, it is the oldest continuously occupied European settlement in North America.
